The Zen House

An Epitome of Timeless Minimalism

Project Overview

Zen House is a thoughtfully crafted family home designed to prioritise calm, clarity, and longevity within a compact urban footprint. Working within a limited site area, the project balances elegant minimalism with warmth, natural light, and greenery—resulting in a home that feels timeless, low-maintenance, and deeply attuned to the rhythms of family life.

Client Brief

The Bewajis, a young family of four, desired a home that felt serene, functional, and easy to maintain while remaining elegant and enduring. Their brief centred on maximising space to ensure 4 bedrooms, a study, a box room and a mini staff quarters, improving natural light, and creating a refined yet relaxed environment that could evolve gracefully with their growing family.

They wanted:

  • A minimal, timeless interior that would age gracefully.
  • Optimised space planning within a compact site.
  • Strong daylight connection and visual openness.
  • A calm, family-friendly home with subtle sophistication.

Our Approach

Zen House was approached as an exercise in intelligent restraint. With limited land area, we focused on spatial efficiency, light optimisation, and minimal architectural gestures that deliver maximum impact. By selectively reworking layouts, enlarging openings, and carefully layering materials, we created a home that feels generous, grounded, and effortlessly livable.

Our Approach
01

Discovery and Concept

Understanding family dynamics, spatial limitations, and the need for long-term adaptability.

02

Spatial Strategy

Reconfiguring layouts, introducing staff quarters using a porta cabin, and strengthening horizon and volume connectivity e.g kitchen– living and ground to 2nd floor connectivity.

03

Design thinking and materiality

Exploring onyx, travertine, suede, ivory leather, and warm neutrals with soft colour accents to enhance tactility but still protect minimalism.

04

Execution and Installtion

Precise execution ensuring durability, ease of maintenance, and timeless visual coherence.

Outcome

Outcome

Zen House stands as a quiet expression of enduring design. Natural light filters generously through enlarged openings, greenery frames every outward view, and a restrained material palette fosters calm and wellness. Years on, the home remains relevant—proof that thoughtful minimalism, when grounded in longevity and care, creates spaces that continue to serve both life and time with grace.
